  Vacation? Staycation! Holiday? Holistay!

On October 20, Hong Kong Airlines to operate Embrace “Home” Kong flight to watch the sunset flight. The flight departs from Hong Kong International Airport at 4: 30 p. m. and is within 200 nautical miles of Hong Kong. You might think that someone willing to pay for a 90-minute flight just to watch a sunset is crazy.

However, the first 100 “flight to nowhere” tickets sold out in 30 minutes. Hong Kong Express also launched a local-round-trip flight, which enables passengers to overlook the city and alleviate the thirst for travel.

Don’t think that only people trapped by the coronavirus will pay for such an “insane” trip. In China, Ctrip analyzed the searches before and during New Year’s holiday and found that “staycation” at hotel is becoming a mainstream. Most of the young people dislike package tour and traditional scenic spots, staycation therefore rises. During the 3-day holiday, they tended to sleep until wake up naturally at the hotel, spending days on TV and mobile phones. Parents used to complain their children “travel to sleep at the hotel”, which totally comes true right now.

Staycation is prevailing over the world.?Staycation?is a?portmanteau?of “stay” and “vacation”, referring to a period in which an individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within?day trip?distance of their home and does not require overnight accommodation. It is also named “holistay”, a portmanteau of “holiday” and “stay”.

The hospitality industry around the world, once or still on the edge of bankruptcy, is expected to benefit most from the growing popularity of staycation.

According to the analysis, the hotels are full in many places. The booking price of three-star hotel increased by 23% from last year, the number for four-star hotel and five-star hotel is 21% and 17% respectively. Post-90s and Post-00s made up the majority of staycationers.

In HongKong, where the travel industry has been greatly impacted, many hotels launch “staycation set” to attract local customers accordingly. People can see English words from the outside through windows of some hotels: “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, “LOVE YOU FOREVER”, “BE A GOOD DOCTOR”, “BEST FRD FOREVER”…… Hotels has become places for locals to host parties instead of its original use.

Cast by the shadow of COVID-19 lock-down, millions of Brits has been joining the staycation trend, so much so that a 33% increase is reported in bookings compared to 2019 – despite restrictions.
